The Mystery of Wine Ageing by Zonin1821
1st November 2017
There are always a few things guaranteed when you are invited to attend a tasting by Zonin1821 and that is you’ll explore some mighty fine wines which will involve some gastronomic delights and you will also grab a whole a whole heap of new education.
Wine ageing is a highly interesting subject for most that love their wines with many improving as the years go by to others that should be enjoyed sooner rather than later. Sommeliers are usually trusted for their broad knowledge of wine and their ability to perfectly guide you through the art of pairing fine wines with food so who better for Zonin1821 to put to the test of ‘The Mystery of Ageing’ than a table full of them!
Zonin1821 really surprised us with a selection of their fine wines dating back to 1991 that were all tasted blind with the task to identify the ages of each one that was poured. What was clearly evident and a thought shared by many, was the wines from Zonin Family Estates were so very fresh and young despite some being over ten years old which for many caused some wrong estimations in the guessed age, in most occasions I was at least a couple of years out (writing down younger rather than older for the ages).
We all love to be surprised in the wine industry and Zonin1821 were certainly keeping us all entertained with remarkable red and white wines. For me, the highlight was the delightful sweeter option of the Vinsanto del Chianti Classico 1991.
The afternoons relaxing lunch was held at a venue I had yet to before visit which added to the days learning – The Bleeding Heart is long established and extremely popular French Restaurant situated just a minute or two’s walk from Farringdon train station down a cobbled courtyard off Greville Street.
