Each year ‘Glass of Bubbly’ recognises the best sparkling wines in the world via their awards with previous winners being mostly Champagne and Italian labels. Judges are looking at visual qualities of the wines along with aromas and flavours with each scored from 100 points.
The top scoring wine was The Paxton & Whitfield 2015 Brut Vintage with the winemaker being Jonica Fox who with her husband Gerard owns Fox & Fox winery in Mayfield, Sussex. Producing a little over 50,000 bottles a year since its formation in 2010, the winery already owns a list of gold medals for their wines with each year significant improvements to the wines they produce. This winning sparkling wine special edition label was in partnership with Paxton & Whitfield cheese stores who are the official supplier to HRH Elizabeth II with a royal warrant.
“This is not an unhealthy battle, instead this is a challenge among these professionals (winemakers) to deliver the greatest, to stand out from the crowd, to amass fellow professional acknowledgements, to surpass expectations and even to confuse itself with the senior greatest labels that have ever existed. You must work with and against mother nature, understand the expressions of your terroir and deliver your greatest blend, you have just one annual shot and you can not miss that moving target… The critics are many, lots unforgiving yet the quality is always recognised. The Glass of Bubbly awards puts these words to the test each year.” Christopher Walkey
Fox & Fox – Paxton & Whitfield 2015 – Tasting notes:
]]>There are so many opinions when it comes to purchasing your next bottle of wine, we hear ‘I do not like Chardonnay or I hate sweet wines or I prefer Italian reds’. If we expand our search and do not limit our options then we have a wide choice and it can become overwhelming so it all becomes less fun and more a serious and time consuming task.
What options are there for choosing wine?
Producer: Once we have discovered a great producer then it is likely we will stick with them and explore their range or rely upon one to delight us each time. We must remember though that there are 100,000’s wine producers globally.
Place: Many places across the globe are producing wines with the most being set within 30° – 50° latitude, both northern and southern hemisphere. Not only France, Italy and Spain, but also Japan, Georgia and Canada… Over 70 countries are listed as producing wine.
Grape (colour): It is stated that 1,368 vine varieties exist all offering their own style of flavours, aromas, colours and quality.
Style: From quality to alcohol level or amounts of sugar to whether or not the wine has bubbles with many ageing decisions too.
Availability / Price: Sometimes we are caught in a moment where it is any bottle will do or we are limited to the wines for sale on the shelf in front of us and of course, our wallets will also have a say on what we opt for.
What is important to remember is just because you have had one bad experience of a wine does not mean all other similar wines will be negative also, the way in which one grape presents itself to you can be completely different to how a producer will showcase it in another wine. Grapes perform differently and can come from warmer or cooler climates thus aromas and flavours will change – Maybe you prefer a fruitier, sweeter expression of a grape over a dry style.
“Chardonnay is a green-skinned grape variety used in the production of white wine. The variety originated in the Burgundy wine region of eastern France, but is now grown wherever wine is produced, from England to New Zealand.” source wikipedia
Think this way: maybe you dislike Champagne and its bubbles, does not mean you can not enjoy Prosecco and its bubbles which is a completely different style of wine made in a very different way. As quoted above, just because a French Chardonnay displeases you does not mean one from New Zealand will be negative also.

The dates (TBC) are from July 20th to July 25th, 2020.

We are looking to visit wineries and carry out tastings and site visits. We are also looking to review over night accommodation. We will be carrying out photo shoots, reviews, tasting notes, interviews and more to include:
We will also be collecting award entry wines so please contact us if you would like us to pass by and collect your wines for this years Glass of Bubbly Awards – Saving you postage cost!
Once again we are doing this totally free of charge so please do get in touch if you would like us to consider a visit to your / your clients winery. We are focusing this visit on the Northern areas of Montagne de Reims, Côte des Blancs and Vallée de la Marne.

We are pleased to release the new branding for the Glass of Bubbly Awards 2020. Thank you to our lovely designer Sarah who did a fantastic job in inspiring this new look and feel.
]]>“It was high time that we changed the branding behind the Glass of Bubbly awards and mostly because the original designs were done by myself and I am no artist, well least ways not in designing! Anyway, we are delighted with the look of our new ‘capsule medal’ badges and certificates which will come in to effect for the 2020 awards.” Christopher Walkey
Only a few months back “why not bring it back” were the words uttered to us by James Graham who had previously been the co-founder and editor of the Vine Magazine. As Glass of Bubbly grew both its online web presence and trade/press tastings as well as commencing The World’s Finest Glass of Bubbly Awards for Champagne & Sparkling Wine, it was felt that the time was right for both parties to get going once again on what was a well loved and widely known publication… Glass of Bubbly issue 18 was born.
“Producing the Glass of Bubbly magazine was initially driven by sheer passion – Myself and Eve (editor) loved fizz and wanted to share this love of ours with others. When we started the Glass of Bubbly concept it was based around the magazine though we slowly gathered popularity online and grew our ‘digital’ audiences then soon after had our own trade tasting events and awards. We had taken on too much…
There was no way we could sustain the magazine at this point due to workloads progressing with other avenues of Glass of Bubbly – The magazine had to be put on the side yet kept ‘warm’. Retiring the magazine was hard to do as we had grown to look forward to each issue’s content, it was our ‘baby’ as such and many readers had enjoyed previous articles and we’d had many lovely comments and photos from readers globally including celebrities.” Christopher & Eve
The new launch of the magazine is in the hands of James Graham who is the new editor – Already hundreds are reading the new pages with dedicated issues for English and Welsh Sparkling Wines recently. “I have had a great response from everyone so far and gathered some great interviews and articles – Readership is growing along with our following across social media.” James Graham.
Want to find out more about the new Glass of Bubbly magazine? Please email James Graham directly via [email protected]
Blind Tasting – Cava vs Slovenian vs Prosecco vs German
As we sat in the new Glass of Bubbly tasting room it was inevitable that some fizz would make its way to the table – Blind tasting format! Founder, vs Editor vs Editor, competed and the good news is that all were happy with a tie in results with the Medot from Slovenia really impressing – Thanks to the following wines which took part:
Slovenia – Medot Cuvée Brut Penina: “Medot and Slovenian sparkling wine at its best here. Rightly so a Gold Medal winner from the winemakers at Medot – Creamy / butter croissant on the nose along with apricot / citrus / touch of honey. Elegant flavours – Clean and clear, defined in showcasing its fruity characters mostly yellow stone fruits with a touch of croissant / creamy honey on the side.”
Cava – Cavas Naveran Dama Vintage Brut 2016: “Fruity and zesty flavours with a touch of creamy petrol in the background.”
Prosecco – Bisol Jeio Prosecco Superiore Brut NV: “Green fruits and a touch of spice on the nose. Fruity and a faint dryness that gives green and yellow fruit flavours, a freshness in the palate which makes it a good palate cleanser for varied light foods.”
Germany – Motzenbacker Riesling Sandstein Brut: “Green fruits and grassy aromas. Alive with flavours, green fruits / forest floor and herbs.”
