Masterstroke & Crossbones – How To Make Blackbeard’s Cocktail
13th January 2020
How one man’s name has echoed through history for sailing, plundering and killing, he’s appeared in books, films, TV shows, video games and even had a Cocktail named after him, I’m talking about a world famous Pirate called Blackbeard.
Blackbeard’s Life
Not much is known about Blackbeard’s early life, the current belief is that he was born in Bristol around 1680, he was called Edward Teach also spelled Edward Thatch.
Blackbeard was not the most successful pirate in the world but he was widely feared and is one of the most well known, the name Blackbeard was derived from his fearsome appearance and thick black beard, it is reported that he tied and lit slow matches under his hat to terrify and dishearten his enemies.
Blackbeard captured a French merchant vessel called La Concorde and changed her to, Queen Anne’s Revenge, at the height of his pirating carer, he commanded 4 ships and had an army of 300 pirates.
After a fierce battle on the HMS Pearl against the Royal Navy, Blackbeard was slain on November 22nd 1718 by Lieutenant Robert Maynard and his crew, after Maynard examined Blackbeard’s body he saw that he had been shot 5 times and cut about 20.
Blackbeard’s body was thrown overboard and his head was hung from the bowsprit of Maynard’s ship so that he could collect the reward of one hundred Pounds.
Masterstroke – Sparkling Wine From England available in Aldi
Tasting Notes – “Green apples and pears with lime on the nose. Tart green apples and lime in flavour. You taste very much what you can smell.”
It tastes more like a Prosecco than an English Fizz because of it being made using the Charmat Method.
Charmat Method is where the fermentation happens within large pressurised stainless-steel tanks and is a cheaper way of making sparking wine compared to the Traditional or Champagne Method.
Crossbones Premium Dark Rum From Aldi
Tasting Notes – “The Rum has a smooth vanilla creaminess that increases with sweetness over time.”
Blackbeard’s Cocktail
Now how do you make a Cocktail fierce enough to match the man himself? First and foremost we will need some Dark Rum and what better Rum to have than one called Crossbones, second you will need a bottle of English Sparkling Wine and third a bottle of Stout.
Ingredients
- Dark Rum
- English Sparkling Wine
- Stout
When making this Cocktail add the rum first, followed by the Sparkling Wine then make sure you pour in the Stout last, so it keeps it’s head.
Cocktail Tasting Notes – “Smooth, creamy/foam and soft green fruit flavours, ingredients pair very well together for a most enjoyable Pirate themed Cocktail.”
