Getting Fizzical at ASDA

Currently, a search on the ASDA website for Champagne and Sparkling Wines brings 51 unique results from English Sparkling to Cava, Champagne to Prosecco so all in all, not a bad performance for what many will see as our nation’s budget supermarket chain!

Their choice of sparkling wines is varied, though has a core of consistency I feel for many of the wines listed I have already tasted and via my Vivino account I have given healthy scores to. I am particularly pleased, personal choice, of course, to see English Sparkling Wines represented by Denbies and the 2009 vintage which I tasted on a recent wine and food pairing assignment, I remember well the wine’s complexity and pleasing toasty aromas and taste.

Though the usual suspects appear in the Champagne section, ie Moet & Chandon and Veuve Clicquot, I am pleased to see a healthy selection of Taittinger Champagne in the 22 examples they stock. The grower option of Louis Bernard is well worth a try also with the 2007 vintage at only £22 is at such great value I feel.

ASDA were kind enough to send us a box full of samples to taste and review to include three from their ‘Extra Special’ selection to include the Louis Bernard Brut Champagne, Prosecco Brut and the Asti Spumante.

My choice of six bottles of bubbly to really spoil yourself shopping at ASDA would be:

Denbies Greenfields 2009

Extra Special Louis Bernard Champagne Premier Cru

Taittinger Brut Vintage 2005 Champagne

Shield ASTI

24KT Pinot Noir Rose

Freixenet Cordon Negro NV
