The Best Sandwiches to Enjoy with Champagne
23rd October 2018
Sandwiches are very popular in many people’s daily diets from packed lunches at school to the quick snack requirement at work, of course, we also love sandwiches during afternoon tea especially when they come with a glass of Champagne or two.
It is said that in the USA alone some 300 million sandwiches are enjoyed each day, the world’s most expensive is the Quintessential Grilled Cheese priced at $214 where the bread itself is baked using Dom Perignon Champagne and brushed with truffle oil that contains flecks of edible gold. Do we have the same passion for sandwiches in the UK, well the figure of around 12 billion sandwiches being eaten every year here certainly would point that way?!
So how about the very popular afternoon tea that many locations across the UK offer such as the famous Afternoon Tea at The Ritz – sandwiches are a key part of the menu and usually a selection is offered all being very delicately prepared and displayed, more so a very light snack to accompany the Champagne over a thicker and fully filled hunger buster solution.
Here at the Glass of Bubbly offices, we decided to put sandwiches to the test alongside two of our medal winning Champagne (Brut Premier Cru Chateau de Boursault & Rosé Charles Legend) – Here are the results from our pairing and tasting:
Cheddar Cheese & Tomato
Paired with Champagne Chateau de Boursault Brut premier Cru: “Creamy texture of cheese and the yellow stone fruits of the Champagne initially. Ending gives cheddar cheese flavours.”
Paired with Champagne Charles Legend Brut Rosé: “Red berry fruit initially then it is on to a creamy taste sensation with hints of milky flavours – the cheddar cheese flavour seems lost.”
Camembert & Chutney
Paired with Champagne Chateau de Boursault Brut premier Cru: “Brings out delicate and tasty yellow fruit flavours of the Champagne with a creamy length.”
Paired with Champagne Charles Legend Brut Rosé: “Initial red berry fruit burst then the chutney comes in to play with a creamy ending with subtle hints of the Camembert cheese.”
Blue Cheese & Spinach Leaf
Paired with Champagne Chateau de Boursault Brut premier Cru: “Great balance. Yellow fruits and creamy blue cheese burst and in the length also, combined very well.”
Paired with Champagne Charles Legend Brut Rosé: “A welcoming balance also, red berry taste sensation initially followed by creamy cheese flavours. Length offers a dry creamy cheese taste.”
Feta & Spinach Leaf
Paired with Champagne Chateau de Boursault Brut premier Cru: “Over powering citrus flavours, all the savoury flavours are lost.”
Paired with Champagne Charles Legend Brut Rosé: “Initial red berry fruit burst followed by dry feta cheese flavours.”
Smoked Salmon and Cream Cheese
Paired with Champagne Chateau de Boursault Brut premier Cru: “Flavours neutralised. Hints of delicate salmon flavours in the length.”
Paired with Champagne Charles Legend Brut Rosé: “Clashed for me. All flavours except for a hint of the cream cheese are lost.”
Prawn, Salad and Mayonnaise
Paired with Champagne Chateau de Boursault Brut premier Cru: “Champagne flavours mostly lost, a near sea breeze taste sensation with hints of meaty prawn in the background.”
Paired with Champagne Charles Legend Brut Rosé: “Red berry fruit flavours of the Champagne really come alive with nearly all the prawn flavours lost.”
Ham, Tomato & Salad
Paired with Champagne Chateau de Boursault Brut premier Cru: “A fine balance between the meaty ham flavours and the fine yellow fruity flavours of the Champagne. Very more-ish. My stand out pairing!” WINNER!!
Paired with Champagne Charles Legend Brut Rosé: “Initial burst of the pinot noir grape from the Champagne then on to delicate savoury flavours.”
Salami
Paired with Champagne Chateau de Boursault Brut premier Cru: “Clashed somewhat for me. The citrus flavours of the Champagne trying to hard to wine over the greasy salami texture – No real winner.”
Paired with Champagne Charles Legend Brut Rosé: “Red berry fruit taste explosion quickly followed by the savoury meat flavours from the salami.”
Chicken, Salad, Cucumber and Tomato
Paired with Champagne Chateau de Boursault Brut premier Cru: “Enjoyable golden fruit flavours shown from the Champagne the on to subtle savoury flavours in the length.”
Paired with Champagne Charles Legend Brut Rosé: “Warm red berry fruit flavours then over to the chicken flavours in the length.”
Roast Beef & Mustard
Paired with Champagne Chateau de Boursault Brut premier Cru: “Initial burst of yellow fruit flavours from the Champagne then subtle beef flavours – the mustard was lost surprisingly.”
Paired with Champagne Charles Legend Brut Rosé: “Initially neutralised flavours with the length containing the beef and mustard making a valiant attempt to shine through.“
