Characters in the wine industry are always important and at Ca’Salina there is a most pleasant and welcoming one in Mr Gregorio Bortolin who is the current owner of this winery in heart of the Valdobbiadene DOCG zone. As we were driving to see Gregorio Bortolin, who I had never met before, Renata from the Prosecco Consortium alerted me that I would be meeting one of the most pleasant Superior Prosecco label owners and how right she was.

When you are on a wine tour many would rightly think that it is all about the wine, but the reality is that you embrace not only the labels each winery produces, but also the people, the vines, the region, the culture, foods and much, much more. Ca’Salina is most wonderfully located in the Prosecco Superiore region overlooking the pleasant rolling hills full of vineyards and the picturesque hill top village of Santa Stefano and holds a great traditional and history in the region. Appropriately located and designed to accommodate a steady flow of visitors annually from the vineyards to the winery itself and with a most great and multi-lingual host in Gregorio Bortolin.

Ca’Salina produces an impressive 500,000 bottles each year with a fine selection of wines to include both DOC and DOCG with Brut, Dry and Extra Dry. I was very pleased to be able to sit with Gregorio Bortolin for a private tasting out the front overlooking splendid views out to the picturesque village of Santa Stefano, and each were satisfyingly refreshing and crisp.

Each of their Prosecco Superiore offers a similar character of floral and fruity aromas with a pleasing fine perlage. The taste is fruity with summer yellow fruits, pears and apples and not overly sweet yet more crisp and dry.

Ca’Salina own a total of 4 hectares of vineyards in along with renting a further 12 hectares they rent and purchase grapes also from producers in the area. Most of their wines are sold within Italy with Germany and Austria being the most popular international destinations for their wines.
