Pairing Italian Food with Sparkling Wine
14th March 2016
Italian food is some of the best in the world and regularly eaten in many households. It’s always handy to have some bubbly to pair perfectly with your dishes!
We’ve stuck mostly with Italian bubbly, but there’s also some to mixing and matching. You can find many of these in your local UK supermarket.
Creamy Pasta
Such as fettucini alfredo and carbonara.
For a cream-based pasta, you’re going to want a crisp bubbly to compliment the rich sauce, probably produced with white grapes. Prosecco or a fruity rosé would work wonderfully.
Prosecco – try: San Leo Brut NV, £10.49
Blanc de Blancs – try: Meonhill Chardonnay Blanc de Blancs, £27.50
Seafood-based
Such as crab linguine, spaghetti with mussells, shrimp scampi.
Seafood always pairs beautifully with a sparkling wine. A dry coastal bubbly would be ideal.
Asti – try: Tesco Asti Spumante, £5.25
Cava – try: Codorniu Rosado Cava Brut, £6.50
Dry sparkling wine – try: Nicolas Feuillatte Brut Champagne, £17.00 or Prosecco Salatin Extra Dry NV, £11.99
Meat-based
Such as spaghetti bolognese and lasagne, usually with tomato sauce.
Blanc de Noirs – try: Pierre Darcys Brut NV Blanc de Noirs, £25.97
Franciacorta Rosé: try: Ferghettina Franciacorta Brut Rosé, £21.49
Chicken parm
Sparkling Rosé – try: Italia Collezione sparkling rosé, £7.99
Lambrusco – try: Monte delle Vigne Lambrusco Selezione 2014, £14.49
Pizza
Pizza can be as varied as the wine itself so you can swap out the bubbly depending on your toppings, such as seafood, meat, tomato or white-sauce base etc. Here’s some good all-rounders:
Prosecco – try: Valdo Oro Puro, £8.99
New world wine – try: Oyster Bay, Cuvée Brut NV, New Zealand, £13.99
Franciacorta – try: Bellavista Franciacorta Cuvee Brut, £28.62
English sparkling – try: Nyetimber Classic Cuvée, £31.99
